1964
Conference of Asian Statisticians recommended the establishment of a statistical training and research center
1967
The Government of Japan offered to provide host facilities for Asian Statistical Institute in Tokyo at the 23rd session of the Economic Commission for Asia and Far East (ECAFE) (now ESCAP)
1969
UNDP and the Government of Japan entered into an Agreement concerning assistance for the Establishment and Operation of Asian Statistical Institute (ASI)
First Project Manager/Director, Raymond T. Bowman, appointed
1970
Plan of Operation was signed by 20 member countries, UN and UNDP and the Asian Statistical Institute was officially inaugurated on 3 June 1970
1973
The second Five-Year Phase of the Institute and its preservation as a regional institution supported by the United Nations were resolved at the 29th session of ESCAP
Second Project Manager/Director, K.R. Nair, was appointed
1975
First Five-Year Phase was completed in September Second Five-Year Phase commenced
1976
Third Project Manager/Director, John G. Miller, was appointed
1977
Asian Statistical Institute (ASI) was renamed Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP)
1979
Governing Council of Training and Research Institutions in the ESCAP Region recommended that SIAP should continue as an autonomous institution in Tokyo and the third Five-Year Phase of the Institute resolved at the 35th session of ESCAP
1980
Second Five-Year Phase was completed in September. Third Five-Year Phase commenced
1984
Fourth Five-Year Phase of the Institute was supported at the 40th session of ESCAP
1985
Fourth Project Manager/Director, Tito A. Mijares, was appointed. Third Five-Year Phase was completed in September.
Fourth Five-Year Phase commenced
1988
Fifth Project Manager/Director, S. Ananda Meegama, was appointed
1990
Fourth Five-Year Phase was completed in September
Fifth One Year and half Phase commenced
1992
Fifth One Year and half Phase was completed in March
Sixth Three-Year Phase commenced
1994
Resolution on Status of the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific was adopted at the 50th session of Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
1995
Sixth Three-Year Phase was completed in March
SIAP was accorded the legal status of a subsidiary body of ESCAP
1995
First Governing Board meeting was held in March in Tokyo
Sixth Director, Lau Kak En, was appointed
Second Governing Board meeting was held in November in Bangkok
1999
SIAP shifted its premises to Makuhari, Chiba-city, Chiba Prefecture in November
2000
Thirtieth Anniversary of the Institute was celebrated with a Ceremony and Seminar on 28 August in Tokyo and followed by Sixth Governing Board Meeting with newly elected members.
2001
Seventh Director, Tomas P. Africa, was appointed on June 2001
Seventh Governing Board meeting was held in December in Bangkok
2005
The First Session of the Governing Council was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand
2006
Eighth Director, Davaasuren Chultemjamts, was appointed on May 2006
The Second of the Governing Council was held in Chiba, Japan
2010
Forty Anniversary of the Institute was celebrated with a Ceremony and Seminar on 31 August in Tokyo.
2012
Ninth Director, Margarita F Guerrero, was appointed on February 2012
2016
Tenth Director, Ashish Kumar , was appointed on December 2016
2020
Fifty Anniversary of UN Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP)
2021
Eleventh Director, Shailja Sharma, was appointed on August 2021
